Lapis Lazuli is one of the oldest and most coveted gemstones in the world. Its name combines the Latin "Lapis" (stone) and the Arabic "Azul" (sky) – an indication of its intense, sky-blue color. Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral, but a rock composed of lazurite (for the deep blue), calcite (white veins), and pyrite (golden flecks). It was mined in Afghanistan over 6,000 years ago and valued as jewelry, a protective stone, and a pigment for paint. The tiny 2mm beads with their facets bring out the characteristic royal blue in its finest form – ideal as spacer beads or for particularly delicate, elegant jewelry creations.
Significant deposits: Afghanistan (Badakhshan), Chile, Russia, Myanmar.
