Its name comes from the Greek "malache" (mallow), as its color is reminiscent of the leaves of this plant. It was already prized as a decorative and ritual stone in ancient Egypt, Greece, China, and among the Maya – the Egyptians fashioned amulets and scarabs from it and used it ground as eyeshadow.
