Malachite owes its name to the Greek word "malache" (mallow), as its color resembles the foliage of the mallow plant. The characteristic feature of malachite is its intense green color with concentric banding and patterns – no two stones are alike. Malachite was already known in ancient Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire, China, and among the Mayans: The Egyptians made amulets and scarabs from it and used it ground as eyeshadow. As a paint, it provided the famous malachite green. The ovals (8×10 mm) particularly beautifully showcase malachite's characteristic banding.
