Mineralogical Properties

Moonstone is a variety of alkali feldspar (orthoclase/adularia) from the KAlSi₃O₈ group and thus belongs to the large family of feldspar minerals. Its characteristic feature is adularescence – a bluish-white shimmer caused by light refraction at thin layers of different feldspar phases. The Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5. Moonstone crystallizes in the monoclinic system and exhibits a silky-pearly luster. The colors range from white and grey to beige and pink to brownish and green. Important deposits are Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Madagascar, and Brazil.
