Opal is an amorphous, water-containing silicon dioxide (SiO₂ · nH₂O) and therefore does not belong to the crystalline minerals, but to the mineraloids. Its water content varies between 3 and 21% depending on the variety. Precious opal is the most valuable variety and is characterized by its characteristic play of color – the so-called opalescence – which is caused by the diffraction of light on tiny silicon dioxide spheres inside the stone. The basic color of milk opal is white to creamy-beige, and the internal play of color shows gentle rainbow reflections. The Mohs hardness is 5.5 to 6.5 – opal is therefore more sensitive than many other gemstones and should be handled with care. The most famous deposits for precious opal are in Australia (Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy), but also in Ethiopia, Mexico, and Brazil.
