The stones vary in size from 7 to 10 mm and shimmer in delicate shades of white, beige, and cream; the typical inner play of color – opalescence – reveals gentle rainbow reflections, making each stone unique. Opal is an amorphous, hydrated silicon dioxide (SiO₂ · nH₂O) with a water content of 3–21% and belongs to the mineraloids. Opalescence is caused by the diffraction of light by tiny SiO₂ spheres inside the stone. The Mohs hardness is 5.5–6.5.
