Morganite is the pink variety of the mineral Beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈) and thus belongs to the same mineral family as Aquamarine (blue), Emerald (green) and Heliodor (yellow). Its delicate rosé color is caused by traces of manganese in the crystal lattice. Beryl crystallizes in the hexagonal system and often forms long, prismatic crystals with a vitreous luster. The Mohs hardness is 7.5 to 8 – making Morganite one of the harder gemstones and ideally suited for delicate jewelry. A special historical detail: The German word "Brille" (glasses) developed from the Greek term "Beryll" – the ancient Greeks recognized the light-refracting properties of this mineral.
