Onyx owes its name to the Greek word "onyx," which means "fingernail" – possibly due to its smooth, horn-like surface. Mineralogically, onyx is a chalcedony and belongs to the quartz family; its deep black color is created by a special dyeing treatment of the natural stone. Even in ancient times, onyx was considered a powerful protective stone against misfortune and was often used as a grave offering.
