Onyx owes its name to the Greek word "onyx", meaning "fingernail" – possibly due to its smooth, horn-like surface. Mineralogically, onyx is a chalcedony and belongs to the quartz family; the deep black colour is created by a special dyeing treatment of the natural stone. Already in ancient times, onyx was considered a powerful protective stone against misfortune and was often used as a grave good. The fancy shapes of this strand are deliberately irregular – each bead is unique with its own silhouette. The deep black and organic contours make this strand an expressive material for individual jewellery and creative design.
