Onyx owes its name to the Greek word "onyx", meaning "fingernail" – possibly due to its smooth, horn-like surface. Sardonyx is a naturally striped variety of chalcedony with characteristic brown and white bands, which has been prized for cameos and signet rings since antiquity. Both stones belong to the quartz family and complement each other in this strand to create an expressive contrast.
