Mineralogically, pearls are not stones, but organic structures made of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃, aragonite) embedded in conchiolin – produced by freshwater mussels. Mohs hardness of only 2.5–4.5. The soft, iridescent shimmer – the so-called luster or orient – is created by the refraction of light on the fine aragonite layers. The "potato" shape (approx. 10 × 12 mm) is a natural, organic growth form. The shades of white – from pure white to cream to ivory – occur naturally during the growth process. White pearls are the most classic and timeless of all pearls – for everything from everyday wear to weddings. Freshwater pearls are primarily cultivated in China. Care instructions: No contact with perfume, hairspray, or acids; wipe with a soft cloth after wearing.
