Mineralogically, pearls are not stones, but organic structures made of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃, aragonite) embedded in conchiolin – produced by freshwater mussels. Mohs hardness of only 2.5–4.5. The soft, iridescent shimmer – the so-called luster or orient – is created by the refraction of light on the fine aragonite layers. The "rice" shape (approx. 3 × 4 mm) is a natural, elongated growth form – especially delicate and subtle. The shades of gray – from silver-gray to dove-gray – develop naturally during the growth process. Gray pearls are the modern alternative to classic white. Freshwater pearls are mainly cultivated in China. Care instructions: No contact with perfume, hairspray, or acids; wipe with a soft cloth after wearing.
