Mother-of-pearl – also known as nacre – is the shimmering inner layer of marine shells, consisting of fine, layered calcium carbonate platelets. This special layered structure refracts light and creates the characteristic, iridescent mother-of-pearl luster. Depending on the type of shell and origin, the color varies greatly – from white and cream to pink and vibrant orange, as in this strand. The tumble shape gives the pearls an organic, naturally rounded silhouette – each pearl is unique. Mother-of-pearl has been valued for jewelry and handicrafts for millennia.
Important countries of origin: Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico.
