Smoky quartz is a brown to smoky grey crystalline quartz, whose characteristic coloration is created by natural radioactive irradiation within the earth – this alters aluminum traces in the crystal lattice. Particularly dark-colored specimens are also known as morion. The twist shape with faceting is a particularly elaborate cut: the slightly twisted silhouette combined with the facets creates a dynamic, lively play of light – which makes the warm brown of the smoky quartz particularly expressive.
