Mineralogically, jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline SiO₂), with a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 and a trigonal crystal system. Its color is created by foreign impurities of up to 20%—in red jasper, these are iron oxides (hematite), which produce the characteristic deep red. Jasper is found worldwide and is one of the oldest gemstones used by humanity. The large beads (25 mm) show off the rich red particularly impressively.
