Ruby appears in this gemstone necklace as an organically shaped button chain of approx. 6 mm in deep, velvety red. The buttons glow in one of the most coveted shades in the gemstone world – from delicate pink to blood red, depending on the chromium content and light incidence. Ruby belongs to the corundum group (Al₂O₃) and, with a Mohs hardness of 9, is one of the hardest natural minerals – surpassed only by diamond. The intense red coloring is caused by traces of chromium in the crystal lattice; a strong pleochroism (color change depending on the viewing angle) is characteristic. Ruby crystallizes in the trigonal system. Its name is derived from the Latin "rubeus" (red) – in the 12th century, it replaced the term "carbuncle," which had previously been used for all red gemstones.
