Mineralogical Properties

Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum (Al₂O₃) and is one of the hardest and rarest gemstones in the world. It takes its name from the Latin rubeus – “red” – which replaced the older term “carbuncle stone” in the 12th century. The characteristic red color – from delicate pink to vibrant carmine red to deep purplish-red – is caused by chromium impurities in the crystal lattice. The Mohs hardness is 9, which makes ruby one of the hardest minerals after diamond. Ruby crystallizes in the trigonal system and exhibits a characteristic vitreous luster. Important localities include Myanmar (Mogok), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Madagascar.
