Sapphire belongs to the corundum group (Al₂O₃) and is thus one of the hardest and most valuable gemstones in the world. Its characteristic blue color is created by traces of titanium and iron in the crystal lattice – depending on the concentration, the color ranges from delicate light blue to the coveted, intense cornflower blue. Sapphire includes all corundum varieties except red (ruby) – so it also exists in pink, yellow, orange, green, and colorless (leucosapphire). Sapphire crystallizes in the trigonal system and shows a lively vitreous luster and sometimes asterism (star effect). Its name is derived from the Greek "sappheiros" (blue). The most important deposits are Sri Lanka (Ceylon sapphire), Myanmar (Burma), Kashmir, Madagascar, Australia, and Thailand.
