A coral is the internal skeleton of skeletal cnidarians (coral polyps). The vast majority of coral species are stony corals, whose skeletons consist of microcrystalline calcium carbonate.
Red foam corals are the parts of the coral colony that form the transition from the base to the solid part of the colony. They occur in two varieties: the already protected Sponga coral and the coral species Melithaea ochracea, which is not yet protected. Their natural color is often white to dirty grayish-brown, which is why they are usually dyed. Stabilization with synthetic resin is common to achieve a more attractive surface sheen and vibrant colors.
