Coral is not a mineral, but an organic material—the inner skeleton of reef-building coral polyps (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃), with a Mohs hardness of 3–4. Sponge coral refers to the transitional area between the coral base and the solid coral colony. It occurs in two varieties: the already protected Sponga coral and the (not yet protected) Melithaea ochracea. The natural color is often white to grayish-brown—therefore, it is dyed and stabilized with synthetic resin to achieve its vibrant red and beautiful luster. Coral has been used as jewelry and amulets for over 30,000 years. The large 10 mm beads are a true statement piece. Please avoid contact with acids, perfume, and cosmetics.
