Sponge coral refers to the outer, porous parts of the coral colony – the transition from the coral base to the solid skeleton. This strand consists of Melithaea ochracea, a species of coral that is currently not under species protection. The natural color of this coral is often white to grayish-brown; for vibrant colors and a more beautiful surface luster, it is dyed and stabilized with synthetic resin. The cylindrical shape (5 x 14 mm) gives the strand a striking, elongated silhouette – ideal for expressive necklaces and ethnically inspired jewelry.
