Coral refers to the internal framework of skeletal cnidarians (coral polyps). The vast majority of coral species are stony corals, whose skeletons are made of microcrystalline calcium carbonate.

Red foam corals are those parts of the coral stem that form the transition from the coral base to the solid part of the stem. They occur in two varieties: the already protected Sponga coral and the not yet protected coral species Melithaea ochracea. Their natural color is often white to dirty gray-brown, which is why they are usually dyed. To achieve a more beautiful surface shine and vibrant colors, stabilization with synthetic resin is common.
