Selenite is mineralogically a variety of gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O), with a Mohs hardness of only 2 – the softest mineral used as a gemstone. The name is derived from the Greek "Selene" (goddess of the moon), as the stone is reminiscent of moonlight. Its fibrous structure gives it its characteristic silky, pearlescent luster. Selenite is formed by the evaporation of seawater or salt lakes. Famous: Selenite crystals up to 11 meters long were discovered in the Naica Mine in Mexico – the largest natural crystals in the world. Deposits: Mexico, Morocco, Spain, USA, Russia. Significance in crystal healing

Selenite is considered a stone of inner peace, protection, and sensitivity.
