Serpentine (Bowenite) Bead Bracelet 8 mm

Mineralogically, serpentine is a group of magnesium silicate minerals (Mg₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄) with a Mohs hardness of 3–5 and a monoclinic to orthorhombic crystal system. The name is derived from the Latin "serpens" (snake) – the surface often resembles snakeskin. The special variety bowenite (named after the American mineralogist George T. Bowen) is one of the hardest serpentine varieties and is often used as a substitute for jade, which is why it is also called "New Jade." In New Zealand, the Maori revere bowenite as "pounamu" (greenstone) and consider it sacred. The stone owes its soft light green to yellow-green color to its magnesium content.
