Mineralogical Properties

Shungite is a Precambrian, carbon-rich rock (up to 98% carbon) from the Karelia region of Russia – one of the oldest and rarest mineral deposits in the world, estimated to be over 2 billion years old. Its distinctive feature is the contained fullerenes (C₆₀) – a unique, spherical carbon structure that distinguishes shungite from all other minerals. The color is a deep, matte black with a natural luster. The Mohs hardness is 3.5 to 4. Shungite is not a crystal in the mineralogical sense, but an amorphous rock. The only significant occurrence worldwide is in Karelia (Russia, near Lake Onega).
