Mineralogical Properties

Mineralogically, Larimar is a pectolite – a calcium-sodium silicate (NaCa₂Si₃O₈(OH)) – and thus belongs to the group of inosilicates. Its extraordinary light blue to turquoise color is caused by traces of copper and vanadium in the crystal lattice, making it one of the rarest colored gemstones in the world. Its Mohs hardness is 4.5 to 5, meaning it is relatively soft and should be handled carefully. Larimar exhibits a silky to matte luster and is often traversed by white, cloud-like patterns that give it its characteristic, ocean-inspired appearance. The more intense and uniform the blue, the more valuable the stone. Larimar has only one known deposit worldwide: the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. It was discovered and named in 1975 by Miguel Méndez – from the girl's name "Lari" and the Spanish word "Mar" for "sea."
