Mineralogical Properties

Emerald is a dark to light green variety of the mineral beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈) and belongs to the ring silicate group – the same mineral family as blue aquamarine and pink morganite. Its characteristic color – from deep blue-green to brilliant yellow-green – is due to small amounts of chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice. Its Mohs hardness is 7.5 to 8. Emerald crystallizes in the hexagonal system and exhibits a characteristic vitreous luster. Natural inclusions (so-called "jardin") are typical and a sign of authenticity. The most significant deposits are located in Colombia (Muzo, Chivor), Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan.
