Mineralogical Properties

Sodalite is a sodium aluminum silicate chloride (Na₈Al₆Si₆O₂₄Cl₂) and belongs to the framework silicates group – more specifically, the sodalite group. It received its name in ancient Greece due to its high sodium content: Soda (salt) and Lith (stone) = salt stone. The characteristic blue color – from delicate light blue to royal blue to deep indigo blue – is created by sulfur radicals in the crystal lattice. Its Mohs hardness is 5.5 to 6. Sodalite crystallizes in the cubic system and displays a characteristic waxy to vitreous luster. White calcite veins (hackmanite inclusions) are typical. Important deposits are found in Canada, Brazil, Namibia, Russia, and India.
