Stone size: 13 × 18 mm
Cut: Oval
Color: Orange to Carnation Red (natural)
Mineralogy: Carnelian (Chalcedony group, Silicon dioxide)
Carnelian is an orange to reddish-orange variety of chalcedony, with a color spectrum ranging from orange to carnation red. The characteristic color is due to natural iron oxide inclusions in the crystal lattice. Carnelian is one of humanity's oldest gemstones and was valued as a protective and lucky stone in ancient Egypt and antiquity. The large ovals (13×18 mm) give the strand an organic, elegant presence – ideal for expressive necklaces and statement chains. Note: Red agate is often referred to as carnelian in trade – however, unlike this natural stone, it is artificially colored.
Significant deposits: Botswana, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, England, USA.
