Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest and most sought-after gemstones in the world. Its name combines the Latin "Lapis" (stone) and the Arabic "Azul" (sky) – an indication of its intense, sky-blue color. Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral, but a rock composed of lazurite (for the deep blue), calcite (white veins), and pyrite (golden gleam). It was already mined in Afghanistan over 6,000 years ago and valued as jewelry, a protective stone, and a paint pigment – the famous ultramarine blue of Renaissance painting was obtained from ground lapis lazuli. The slightly larger nuggets (approx. 6×8 mm) emphasize the natural character of the stone – each bead is unique with an individual shape and color distribution.
