Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red grinding residue colors the cooling water blood-red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specular hematite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The small 3mm cubes with a matte surface appear particularly clear and modern due to their geometric shape – ideal for delicate jewelry creations. Real hematite is heavy and cool to the touch – a reliable distinguishing feature from pressed hematite powder (hematine).
