Hematite is one of the most important iron ore minerals and has been known for millennia – its name is derived from the Greek "haima" (blood), as the red grinding dust colors the cooling water blood-red during grinding. Crystalline hematite is also known as specularite, red iron ore, or kidney ore. The olive shape lends a special elegance to this strand – the elongated, bulging beads catch the light differently than round spheres and add an expressive accent to necklaces and colliers. Real hematite is heavy and cool to the touch – a reliable distinguishing feature compared to pressed hematite powder (hematine).
