Approximately 15 million years ago, a celestial body about 1.5 kilometers in diameter struck the Earth in what is now the Nördlinger Ries (Bavaria). The enormous energies released generated extreme heat and pressure, causing the rock to melt and be thrown into the atmosphere. During its flight, the molten mass cooled and solidified into natural glass. The debris was distributed mainly over the area of today's Czech Republic – hence the name after the Vltava River, the most important discovery site. Moldavite exhibits a characteristic olive-green to brownish coloration, which varies depending on the find locality, as well as a typical, irregular surface structure. Its Mohs hardness is 5 to 5.5.
