The characteristic golden shimmer – known as aventurescence – is created by tiny, plate-like inclusions of hematite, goethite, or copper, which reflect light like small mirrors and make the stone sparkle with a thousand sunbeams. Sunstone is a variety of oligoclase (Na,Ca)(Al,Si)₄O₈ from the plagioclase (feldspar) family – mineralogically closely related to moonstone and labradorite, which also exhibit fascinating optical phenomena.
