Sunstone is a variety of oligoclase or aventurine feldspar (Na,Ca)(Al,Si)₄O₈ and thus belongs to the large family of plagioclases within the feldspar group. Its characteristic golden shimmer—the so-called aventurescence—is caused by tiny, platy inclusions of hematite, goethite, or copper in the crystal lattice, which reflect light like small mirrors. The Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5. Sunstone crystallizes in the triclinic system and exhibits a characteristic vitreous luster. It is closely related to moonstone and labradorite—all three belong to the feldspar family and show fascinating optical phenomena.
