Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide (MgAl₂O₄) and belongs to the group of oxides. It crystallizes in the cubic system and often forms octahedral crystals with a characteristic vivid glassy luster. Its Mohs hardness is 7.5 to 8 – making spinel exceptionally robust and ideally suited for delicate jewelry. Spinel comes in an impressive spectrum of colors: red, pink, orange, blue, violet, black, and colorless – depending on the trace elements present, such as chromium (red), iron (blue/black), or zinc (green). Red spinel was historically often mistaken for ruby – for example, the famous "Black Prince's Ruby" in the British Crown Jewels is actually a spinel.
