The red color is caused by trace elements of chromium in the crystal lattice – the same element that gives the ruby its color, which explains the historical confusion that lasted for centuries: the famous "Black Prince's Ruby" in the British Imperial State Crown is actually a spinel. Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide (MgAl₂O₄) from the oxide group, which crystallizes in the cubic system and forms octahedral crystals. Mohs hardness: 7.5–8, lively vitreous luster. Spinel's broad color spectrum – red due to chromium, blue/black due to iron, green due to zinc – makes it one of the most versatile gemstones.
