Mineralogical Properties

Sugilite is a very rare cyclosilicate from the osumilite mineral group with the chemical formula KNa₂(Fe,Mn,Al)₂Li₃Si₁₂O₃₀. Its characteristic violet to purplish-red color is caused by manganese ions in the crystal lattice. Its Mohs hardness is 5.5 to 6.5. Sugilite crystallizes in the hexagonal system and exhibits a characteristic waxy to vitreous luster. It is one of the rarest gemstones in the world – its name goes back to the Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who first described it in 1944. The original discovery site is in Japan; the most important and largest deposit is located in South Africa (Wessels Mine, Kalahari). Almost all known deposits are already largely exhausted, which makes sugilite a particularly valuable collector's item.
