Sugilite is one of the rarest minerals in the world – a cyclosilicate from the osumilite mineral group with the chemical formula KNa₂(Fe,Mn,Al)₂Li₃Si₁₂O₃₀. The violet coloration is caused by manganese ions in the crystal lattice. Mohs hardness: 5.5–6.5, hexagonal crystal system, waxy to vitreous luster. Named after the Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who first described it in 1944. First discovery site: Japan; most significant deposit: South Africa (Wessels Mine, Kalahari). Almost all known locations are now largely exhausted.
