Mineralogical Properties

Tanzanite is an intensely blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite (Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)₃(OH)) and belongs to the sorosilicate group. Its characteristic color – from radiant sapphire blue to warm blue-violet – is created by traces of vanadium in the crystal lattice. A special feature of tanzanite is its pronounced pleochroism: depending on the viewing angle, it displays different colors – blue, violet, and burgundy. Its Mohs hardness is 6 to 7. Tanzanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and shows a lively vitreous luster. Sometimes it also exhibits a cat's eye effect. It was discovered in Tanzania in 1967 and named after its only known locality – the Merelani Hills at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Tanzanite is thus one of the geographically rarest gemstones in the world.
