Garnet is a group of silicates – the red varieties almandine (Fe₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃) and pyrope (Mg₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃) are the best-known gemstones. Depending on the variety, the Mohs hardness is between 6.5 and 7.5. The deep red color is caused by iron and manganese ions in the crystal lattice.
