Mineralogical properties

Peridot is the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄ and belongs to the group of nesosilicates. Its characteristic olive-green to yellow-green color is caused by the iron content in the crystal lattice – the more iron, the stronger the green. The Mohs hardness is 6.5 to 7. Peridot crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and exhibits a characteristic vitreous to greasy luster. It is one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one color. Important localities include Egypt (Zabargad Island), Pakistan, Myanmar, China, USA, and Ethiopia.

In crystal healing, peridot is considered a powerful cleansing and renewal stone – Hildegard von Bingen already described it as fever-reducing and detoxifying. The following effects are attributed to it:
