Emerald is the dark to light green variety of the mineral beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈) from the cyclosilicate group – belonging to the same mineral family as aquamarine (blue) and morganite (pink). The green coloration is caused by chromium and vanadium impurities in the crystal lattice. Mohs hardness: 7.5–8, hexagonal crystal system.
