Mineralogical Properties

Aquamarine is a blue to bluish-green variety of the mineral beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈) and belongs to the cyclosilicate group. It rightly bears its name: aqua marina means "water of the sea" in Latin. The characteristic color – from delicate light blue to aquamarine blue to dark greenish-blue – is caused by iron ions in the crystal lattice. Its Mohs hardness is 7.5 to 8. Aquamarine crystallizes in the hexagonal system and shows a characteristic vitreous luster with high transparency. The most significant deposits are in Brazil (Minas Gerais); other locations include Afghanistan, Russia, China, Pakistan, and various African countries.
