Mineralogical Properties

Peridot is the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄ and belongs to the group of nesosilicates. Its characteristic olive green to yellow-green color is caused by the iron content in the crystal lattice – the more iron, the stronger the green. The Mohs hardness is 6.5 to 7. Peridot crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and exhibits a characteristic glassy to greasy luster. It is one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one color. Important localities include Egypt (Zabargad Island), Pakistan, Myanmar, China, USA, and Ethiopia.
