Peridot is the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄) from the nesosilicate group. Its olive-green color is caused by the iron content in the crystal lattice – the higher the iron content, the more intense the green. Mohs hardness: 6.5–7, orthorhombic crystal system.
