Spinels appear in this gemstone necklace as a finely faceted 3 mm bead strand. The faceting makes each stone light up like a small spark – true to the meaning of the name "spinel" (from the Greek "spinos" = spark). Spinel is one of the world's most valuable yet most underrated gemstones: in good quality, it surpasses many better-known stones in clarity and brilliance. Red spinel was historically often confused with ruby – the famous "Black Prince's Ruby" in the British Imperial State Crown is actually a spinel. Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide (MgAl₂O₄) from the oxide group, which crystallizes in the cubic system and forms octahedral crystals. Mohs hardness: 7.5–8, vivid vitreous luster. It occurs in a broad spectrum of colors: red, pink, orange, blue, violet, black to colorless – depending on trace elements. Mining locations: Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Vietnam.
