Mineralogical properties

Rutile quartz is a rock crystal or light smoky quartz (SiO₂) with enclosed rutile needles (TiO₂ - titanium dioxide). These needle-like inclusions occur during the crystallization of the quartz, when rutile crystals are deposited parallel or crosswise in the quartz lattice. The color of the needles ranges from golden yellow to rose gold to silvery-gray - depending on the titanium content and oxidation state. The Mohs hardness of quartz is 7, that of rutile is 6 to 6.5. Rutile quartz shows a lively glassy luster and is always unique in its appearance - no two stones are alike. The delicate golden needles have also given the stone the poetic name "Venus hair."
