Mineralogical Properties

In the jewelry and healing stone sector, the term “Howlite” usually refers to so-called gel magnesite – a white, porous mineral that is mineralogically very similar to genuine howlite and is often traded under this name. Genuine howlite is mineralogically a rare borate mineral (Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅) and was named in 1868 after the Canadian mineralogist Henry How. Both minerals show a characteristic white to cream-colored base, often traversed by black-grey to brown veins – a natural pattern reminiscent of marble. The Mohs hardness is 3 to 3.5, which is why howlite jewelry should be handled with care. Due to its porous structure, it readily absorbs color and is often dyed – for example, turquoise or blue.
