Black tourmaline, mineralogically known as schorl, belongs to the tourmaline group of ring silicates. Its chemical formula is NaFe²⁺₃Al₆(Si₆O₁₈)(BO₃)₃(OH)₃(OH). The stone crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5. Its characteristic deep black color is due to its high iron content. Tourmaline exhibits piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties.

Occurrence and history

Black tourmaline is found worldwide, with significant deposits in Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the USA, Madagascar, and the Alps. The name "tourmaline" derives from the Sinhalese "turamali," meaning "stone with mixed colors." The stone was known in antiquity and was used in the Middle Ages as a protective stone against negative influences.
