Labradorite is known for one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the mineral world: labradorescence. Depending on how the light hits it, the stone shimmers in brilliant blue, green, gold, or violet – as if a northern light were trapped inside. This play of colors is created by light refraction on thin layers within the stone. Labradorite was discovered in 1770 on the Labrador Peninsula in Canada – hence its name. This pendant is set in 925 sterling silver.
Stone size: approx. 19 x 22 mm
Cut: Cabochon, polished
Setting: 925 sterling silver
Color: Gray with a blue-green-gold play of color (labradorescence)
Mineralogy: Feldspar (plagioclase group), labradorescence due to light refraction
The polished surface brings out the play of color in the labradorite particularly well – an expressive pendant for a silver chain or as a magical eye-catcher in custom-made jewelry.
Significant locations: Canada (Labrador), Finland, Madagascar, Russia, Norway.
