Originally from central Japan, hinoki essential oil is extracted from the Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa. The hinoki cypress is considered one of the "five sacred trees of Kiso." Its wood was traditionally used for the construction of palaces, temples, shrines, baths, and the famous Noh theaters.

The oil is particularly famous for its characteristic and typically Japanese aroma. The wood is pinkish-brown in color, has a faint lemon scent, and is incredibly resistant to decay and insects. Highly revered by the Japanese, hinoki forests have been protected since the times of the Japanese feudal lords and samurai. Today, the hinoki cypress is a popular ornamental tree in gardens and parks.
