About Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa):

The Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is native to central Japan and is considered one of the "five sacred trees of Kiso." These majestic trees have been protected and revered since the time of Japanese feudal lords and samurai. The wood is pinkish-brown, has a light lemon scent, and is incredibly resistant to decay and insects—qualities that have made it the preferred material for centuries for the construction of palaces, temples, shrines, traditional hot springs (onsen), and the famous Noh theaters. The essential oil is extracted from the wood through steam distillation and carries the characteristic, typically Japanese aroma that has been valued in Japan for centuries for spiritual purposes and relaxation. Today, the Hinoki cypress is also a popular ornamental tree in gardens and parks worldwide.

Perfect for:

  • Meditation and spiritual practice
  • Raising spiritual awareness
  • Calming an agitated, stressed mind
  • Mental revitalization and mental clarity
  • Relaxation and inner peace
  • Natural insect repellent
  • Japanese atmosphere and Zen ambience
  • Aromatherapy for emotional well-being

Aroma profile:

Hinoki has a distinctive, slightly lemony, woody scent with fresh, balsamic notes. The aroma is calming, spiritually uplifting, and quintessentially Japanese – reminiscent of traditional Japanese temples, Zen gardens, and onsen (hot springs). It blends beautifully with frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, citrus oils, lavender, and other meditative oils.

Combination recommendations:

  • For meditation: Hinoki + frankincense + sandalwood
  • For spiritual awareness: Hinoki + Holy Frankincense + Cedarwood
  • For relaxation: Hinoki + Lavender + Bergamot
  • Japanese Zen blend: Hinoki + Yuzu + Cedarwood
  • For mental clarity: Hinoki + lemon + rosemary
  • Against insects: Hinoki + Citronella + Lavender

The five sacred trees of Kiso:

In Japanese culture, five tree species are revered as the "sacred trees of Kiso": Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa), Sawara (Chamaecyparis pisifera), Asunaro (Thujopsis dolabrata), Kōyamaki (Sciadopitys verticillata), and Nezuko (Thuja standishii). These trees were traditionally used for the construction of sacred structures and have been protected for centuries. Hinoki is considered the most precious of these five trees and is especially valued for its spiritual properties and exceptional wood.

Traditional uses in Japan:

Hinoki wood has been used in Japan for centuries for various traditional purposes:

  • Temples & Shrines: Construction of sacred structures and religious buildings
  • Palaces: Construction of imperial and feudal palaces
  • Onsen (baths): Traditional Japanese bathtubs made of hinoki wood
  • Noh Theatre: Stages for traditional Japanese theatre art
  • Spiritual practice: incense burning and meditation

Hinoki for spiritual awareness:

Hinoki is traditionally used to enhance spiritual awareness and foster a deeper connection to the spiritual dimension. Its fragrance helps calm the mind, quiet thoughts, and induce a meditative state. In the Japanese Zen tradition, hinoki is valued for its ability to promote clarity, presence, and inner peace.
