In the diffuser: Add 4-6 drops to your diffuser for a calming, relaxing atmosphere – perfect for meditation, relaxation or stress relief.

In the bath: Add 3-4 drops (mixed with an emulsifier such as sea salt or carrier oil) to your bathwater for a relaxing, muscle-relaxing bath – ideal after sports or for tension relief.

Aromatherapy: Inhale directly from the bottle or place 1-2 drops on a tissue for emotional support, inner peace and comfort.

Culinary use: Add 1 drop to Mediterranean dishes, soups, stews, or meat dishes for a savory marjoram flavor. Use only food-grade marjoram oil!

About marjoram (Origanum majorana):

Marjoram, also known as garden marjoram or sausage herb, is an annual plant from the mint family (Lamiaceae) that originates from the Mediterranean region. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers through steam distillation and contains valuable constituents such as terpinen-4-ol, sabinene, and linalool. Marjoram has been used traditionally for centuries – both as a culinary spice and in folk medicine for its calming, muscle-relaxing, and sleep-inducing properties. The name "marjoram" derives from the Latin "maior" (greater), which alludes to its prized qualities. In ancient times, marjoram was considered a symbol of good fortune and was used at weddings.

Perfect for:

  • Relaxing massage for muscle tension
  • Muscle relaxation after exercise
  • Promoting restful sleep
  • Stress reduction and emotional balance
  • Headaches and tension headaches
  • Relaxing baths in the evening
  • Meditation and mindfulness practice
  • Culinary use in Mediterranean cuisine

Aroma profile:

Marjoram has a warm, herbaceous, and slightly sweet fragrance with woody, camphor-like notes. The aroma is calming, comforting, and grounding. It blends beautifully with lavender, Roman chamomile, bergamot, rosemary, eucalyptus, cypress, clary sage, and other herbaceous or woody oils.

Combination recommendations:

  • For muscle relaxation: Marjoram + Lavender + Peppermint
  • For sleep: Marjoram + Lavender + Roman Chamomile
  • For relaxation: Marjoram + Bergamot + Ylang Ylang
  • After sports: Marjoram + Wintergreen + Peppermint
  • For headaches: Marjoram + Lavender + Peppermint
  • For emotional balance: Marjoram + Frankincense + Lavender

Marjoram for muscles & relaxation:

Marjoram is particularly known for its muscle-relaxing and calming properties:

  • Muscle relaxation: Helps to loosen and relax tense muscles.
  • After exercise: Supports regeneration and relieves muscle soreness
  • For tension: Especially soothing for neck, shoulders and back
  • Warming effect: Promotes blood circulation and creates soothing warmth.
  • Pain-relieving: Traditionally used for muscle and joint pain

Marjoram for sleep & emotional well-being:

Marjoram is also valued in aromatherapy for its sleep-promoting and emotionally calming properties:

  • Sleep-promoting: Helps to calm down and find restful sleep.
  • Calming: Relieves stress, nervousness, and inner restlessness
  • Comforting: Creates a feeling of security and warmth
  • Grounding: Helps you feel grounded and centered
  • Balancing: Promotes emotional balance and inner peace

Culinary uses:

Marjoram oil is a wonderful addition to the kitchen and can replace fresh or dried marjoram – however, it's much more concentrated! One drop is often enough for an entire dish. Perfect for:

  • Meat dishes (especially poultry, pork, lamb)
  • Sausages and sausage products (hence the name "sausage herb")
  • Soups and stews
  • Potato dishes
  • Mediterranean vegetable dishes
  • Tomato sauces and pizza
  • Herb butter and marinades

Traditional use:

Marjoram has been valued since antiquity and was already used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Traditionally, marjoram is used for:

  • Muscle and joint pain: For tension, rheumatism and arthritis
  • Sleep disorders: To promote restful sleep
  • Nervousness & Stress: For calming and relaxation
  • Headaches: For tension headaches and migraines
  • Digestive problems: To support digestion
  • Respiratory system: For colds and coughs

Marjoram vs. Oregano:

Although marjoram and oregano are related (both belong to the genus Origanum), there are important differences:

  • Marjoram (Origanum majorana): Mild, sweetish, calming, muscle-relaxing
  • Oregano (Origanum vulgare): Sharper, spicier, stimulating, immune-boosting
  • Uses: Marjoram for relaxation and sleep, oregano for immune system and energy
  • Scent: Marjoram is softer and sweeter, oregano is stronger and spicier.

Marjoram in history:

Marjoram has a long and venerable history:

  • Ancient Greece: Dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, symbol of happiness and love
  • Roman Empire: Used in wreaths at weddings and festivals
  • Middle Ages: Cultivated as a medicinal herb in monastery gardens
  • Folk medicine: Traditionally used for muscle and nerve ailments
