About Ocotea from Ecuador:
Ocotea comes from the Ocotea tree (Ocotea quixos), which is native to the rainforests of Ecuador. The essential oil is extracted from the trunk and leaves and botanically belongs to the same family as cinnamon (Lauraceae). Although Ocotea belongs to the cinnamon genus, it has an aroma that differs significantly from that of common cinnamon – it is more complex, woodier, and has its own unique character. What makes Ocotea special is its exceptionally high alpha-humulene content – among all essential oils, Ocotea has the highest proportion of this valuable compound. Alpha-humulene is a sesquiterpene, also found in hops, and is known for its calming and balancing properties.
Perfect for:
- Supports metabolism and general well-being
- Emotional grounding and balance
- Warming massage
- Cozy atmosphere in autumn and winter
- Culinary creativity with a unique aroma
- Aromatherapy for well-being
- Relaxing baths
- Alternative to conventional cinnamon
Aroma profile:
Ocotea has a warm, spicy, woody fragrance with cinnamon-like, yet distinctly different, notes. The aroma is more complex and earthy than traditional cinnamon, with balsamic and slightly sweet nuances. It blends beautifully with cinnamon, clove, ginger, orange, cardamom, frankincense, myrrh, and other spice or woody oils.
Combination recommendations:
- For metabolism: Ocotea + grapefruit + peppermint
- Cozy atmosphere: Ocotea + cinnamon + orange
- For grounding: Ocotea + frankincense + cedarwood
- Spice mix: Ocotea + clove + ginger + cardamom
- For relaxation: Ocotea + Lavender + Bergamot
- Exotic blend: Ocotea + Myrrh + Sandalwood
Alpha-Humulene – The special ingredient:
Ocotea has the highest alpha-humulene content of all essential oils. This special compound makes Ocotea unique.
- Sesquiterpenes: Complex aromatic compounds with special properties
- Calming: Promotes emotional balance and peace
- Balancing: Supports general well-being
- Also found in hops: Known from beer production
- Unique: No other essential oil has a higher concentration.
Ocotea vs. Cinnamon:
Although Ocotea belongs to the cinnamon genus, there are important differences:
- Ocotea: From stem and leaves, complex, woody, highest alpha-humulene content
- Cinnamon: From bark, sweeter, more intense, higher cinnamaldehyde content
- Aroma: Ocotea is distinctly different – earthier and balsamicer
- Origin: Ocotea from Ecuador, cinnamon from Sri Lanka/China
- Uses: Ocotea for metabolism and well-being, cinnamon for the immune system
From the rainforests of Ecuador:
Ecuador is known for its exceptional biodiversity and rainforests. The Ocotea tree grows in these tropical forests and is harvested sustainably. Young Living works with local communities to ensure sustainable harvesting and the protection of the rainforests. This makes Ocotea not only a valuable essential oil but also a responsibly sourced product.
Culinary uses:
Ocotea oil is a unique addition to the kitchen – however, it's much more concentrated than ground cinnamon! One drop is often enough for an entire dish. Perfect for:
- Smoothies and protein shakes
- Desserts and sweets
- Tea and spiced tea
- Oatmeal and muesli
- Baked goods (use sparingly)
- Savory dishes (curries, stews)
- chocolate and cocoa
