Here's how to use your sage oil:
For hormonal balance: Place 1-2 drops into an empty capsule and take it with water – traditionally used to support menopause, relieve hot flashes, or alleviate hormonal fluctuations. Sage contains phytoestrogens, which can help promote hormonal balance.
In the diffuser: Add 3-5 drops to your diffuser (sage is very intense, so use less) for a cleansing, clarifying atmosphere – perfect for meditation or energetic cleansing.
Massage: Dilute 1-2 drops with a carrier oil (e.g., V-6™ or jojoba oil) and massage the mixture onto your abdomen, lower back, or soles of your feet—traditionally used for support during menopause. IMPORTANT: Sage is a skin irritant and must be highly diluted (at least 1:4).
Aromatherapy: Inhale gently from the bottle (not too close) for emotional clarity and mental strengthening.
Energetic cleansing: Diffuse sage in rooms you want to energetically cleanse – similar to traditional sage smudging.
Application tips:
- During menopause: Take internally (in capsule form) for hormonal balance
- For hot flashes: Take internally or apply diluted to the soles of the feet.
- For excessive sweating: Take internally (short-term)
- For energetic cleansing: In a diffuser in rooms
- For mental clarity: Use in a diffuser or inhale.
- For hormonal fluctuations: Take internally (for no longer than 2 weeks at a time)
Important information: Sage is a very potent essential oil. ALWAYS dilute heavily before topical application (at least 1:4 with a carrier oil). NOT suitable for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, or children. DO NOT use if you have epilepsy. DO NOT use if you have high blood pressure. For short-term internal use only (maximum 2 weeks at a time). Contains thujone – do not overdose. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children.
About sage (Salvia officinalis):
Common sage (Salvia officinalis) is a perennial subshrub from the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the Mediterranean region. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation and contains valuable constituents such as thujone (up to 50%), 1,8-cineole, and camphor. The name "Salvia" derives from the Latin "salvare" (to heal) – a reference to its exceptional medicinal properties. Sage has been used traditionally for millennia – the ancient Romans even called it "herba sacra" (sacred herb). The oil is known for its powerful cleansing, hormone-balancing, and antiperspirant properties.
Perfect for:
- Hormonal balance during menopause
- Relief from hot flashes and night sweats
- Support for hormonal fluctuations
- Sweat reduction in cases of excessive sweating
- Energy cleansing of rooms
- Aromatherapy: mental clarity
- Meditation and spiritual practice
- Cleansing atmosphere
Aroma profile:
Sage has a spicy, herbaceous, camphoraceous scent with woody, slightly bitter notes. The aroma is intense, purifying, and clarifying. It harmonizes beautifully with lavender, rosemary, lemon, bergamot, clary sage, frankincense, and other herbal or woody oils.
Combination recommendations:
- For menopause: Sage + Clary sage + Geranium
- For energetic cleansing: Sage + Frankincense + Cedarwood
- For mental clarity: Sage + Rosemary + Lemon
- Cleansing blend: Sage + Lavender + Bergamot
Sage for menopause & hormones:
Sage is particularly known for its hormone-balancing properties:
- Phytoestrogens: Contains plant estrogens that can help promote hormonal balance.
- For hot flashes: Can reduce frequency and intensity
- Antiperspirant: Traditionally used against night sweats and excessive sweating
- Hormonal fluctuations: Can help balance symptoms
- Mood swings: Can promote emotional balance
Thujone – The main ingredient:
Sage oil contains up to 50% thujone, a powerful compound:
- Highly effective: Responsible for many of the therapeutic properties
- Neurotoxic in high doses: Therefore, use only for short periods and in moderation.
- Not suitable for epilepsy: May trigger seizures
- Not for pregnant women: May induce labor
- Respect is required: Sage is a powerful oil that must be used with care.
Sage vs. Clary Sage:
Although both belong to the genus Salvia, there are important differences:
- Sage (Salvia officinalis): Stronger, camphoraceous, contains thujone – for menopause, not for pregnant women
- Clary sage (Salvia sclarea): Sweeter, milder, no thujone – for PMS and menstruation, gentler
- Uses: Sage for menopause and sweat reduction, clary sage for menstrual cycle.
- Safety: Clary sage is safer for long-term use.
Energy cleansing:
Sage is traditionally used for energetic cleansing (similar to smudging):
- Cleaning spaces: Removes negative energy from rooms
- After conflicts: Clears the atmosphere after arguments or stress
- New spaces: Energetically cleans new apartments or houses
- Before meditation: Create a clear, sacred space.
- Alternative to smoking: Diffusion instead of burning
Safety & Dosage:
Sage is a very strong essential oil and requires special care:
- Always dilute: at least 1:4 with carrier oil
- For short-term use only: Do not take internally for more than 2 weeks at a time.
- Not for pregnant women: May induce labor
- Not for use in cases of epilepsy: Thujone can trigger seizures.
- Not for people with high blood pressure: May raise blood pressure
- Do not overdose: Thujone is toxic in high doses.
- Skin test: Always test on a small area.
Traditional use:
Sage has been used traditionally since ancient times:
- "Herba sacra": Revered by the Romans as a sacred herb
- Middle Ages: "Why should a person die in whose garden sage grows?"
- For women: Traditionally used for menopause and hormonal imbalances
- Antiperspirant: Used for centuries to combat excessive sweating
- Smudging: For spiritual cleansing
