Mineralogy & History
Peridot is the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄) and belongs to the group of nesosilicates. Its characteristic green color is caused by iron, which is firmly bound within the crystal lattice – unlike many other gemstones, the color is not due to trace elements, but is an essential component of the mineral itself. Hardness: 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.
Peridot forms deep in the Earth's mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Significant deposits are found on the Egyptian island of Zabargad (Zebirget), in Pakistan (Kashmir), Myanmar, and the USA (Arizona). Peridot has been mined on Zabargad for over 3,500 years – it is considered one of humanity's oldest known gemstones.
In antiquity, peridot was often confused with emerald and referred to as the "Gem of the Sun." The Egyptians called it topazios – after the island of Zabargad, which was then called Topazios. Peridot can also be found in medieval European church treasures, long mistaken for emeralds, including in the Shrine of the Three Kings in Cologne Cathedral. A particular curiosity: peridot has also been found in meteorites – making it one of the few gemstones that are not exclusively terrestrial in origin.

Emotional Level: Peridot is said to help release old hurts and grudges and look forward again. It is described as supportive during phases of new beginnings – after changes, separations, or personal crises.
Heart Chakra: Assigned to the heart chakra, peridot is considered a stone that is supposed to promote compassion, openness, and gratitude – both in dealing with others and with oneself.
Cleansing & Clarity: In the tradition of healing stone lore, peridot is described as a clarifying stone that is supposed to dissolve negative thought patterns and inner tension. It is associated with lightness and a fresh, unburdened perspective on one's own life situation.
Protection & Tradition: In many cultures, peridot was considered a protective stone that was supposed to ward off evil spirits and anxious thoughts. In ancient Egypt, it was revered as the stone of the goddess Isis.
Note: The described effects come from the tradition of healing stone lore and are not scientifically proven statements. Gemstones do not replace medical or therapeutic treatment.
General Notes
Peridot is a natural product – slight color differences and individual inclusions are signs of its authenticity. For care, a soft, dry cloth is sufficient. Please store separately from other jewelry to avoid scratches. Peridot is sensitive to acids and strong cleaning agents – therefore, apply perfume and creams before putting it on.
