Citrine is the yellow to golden-yellow variety of crystalline quartz (SiO₂) and thus belongs to the large quartz family. Its characteristic color – from pale lemon yellow to warm golden yellow to intense yellow-orange – is caused by traces of iron(III) ions in the crystal lattice. The Mohs hardness is 7 – making citrine robust, suitable for everyday wear, and ideal for jewelry. Citrine crystallizes in the trigonal system and exhibits a lively vitreous luster. Its name is derived from the Latin "citrus" (lemon) – a direct reference to its sunny color.
